Elmer C. Robinson was a real-life American homicide detective best known for helping capture the infamous “Lonely Hearts Killers” — Raymond Fernandez and Martha Beck (below) — in the late 1940's.

🔎 Who he was.
A Nassau County (New York) police detective active in the 1940's, he worked major homicide cases, most notably the “Lonely Hearts” murders known for intense dedication to his job, often at personal cost.
🕵️ The “Lonely Hearts Killers” case.
Fernandez and Beck targeted lonely women through personal ads, then defrauded and murdered them,
Elmer, along with other detectives, tracked and arrested the pair in 1949. The killers eventually confessed
to multiple murders and were convicted and sentenced to death on 8th March 1951, they were executed in
the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison in New York.
💔 Personal tragedy.
Elmer’s life was marked by tragedy during the investigation, his heavy workload and emotional strain reportedly contributed to his wife’s decline and eventual death, this aspect of his life is often emphasised in dramatisations of the case.

Elmer is portrayed by John Travolta in the 2006 film "Lonely Hearts", the movie is directed by Todd
Robinson, who is actually Elmer’s grandson, the film dramatises both the investigation and Elmer’s
personal struggles.
